RCDs, RCBOs and Compliance Requirements
Safety switches are the single biggest safety improvement in a switchboard upgrade. Understanding the options helps you compare quotes and choose the right setup for your home.
Circuit Breakers
Circuit breakers protect wiring from overloads and short circuits by cutting power when a circuit draws more current than it is rated for. They replace old rewireable fuses, and they can be reset with the flick of a switch.
RCDs (Safety Switches)
A residual current device (RCD) monitors the current flowing through a circuit and cuts power in a fraction of a second if it detects current leaking to earth, such as through a person. This is what protects you from a fatal electric shock. Under the Australian wiring rules, AS/NZS 3000:2018, all power and lighting circuits in homes must be RCD protected when a new switchboard is installed, and a single RCD can protect no more than three circuits.
RCBOs
An RCBO combines a circuit breaker and an RCD in one device, protecting a single circuit. The difference matters when something goes wrong. With a shared RCD, a fault on one circuit cuts power to every circuit on that RCD, so a faulty outdoor light could switch off your fridge. With an RCBO on each circuit, only the faulty circuit trips, and everything else stays on.
RCBOs cost more per circuit, but they make faults much easier to find and avoid nuisance tripping. For most homes, we recommend RCBOs on critical circuits such as fridges, freezers and medical equipment at a minimum, and we will talk you through the trade-offs when quoting.
